A large container plunged from the Congo Cross Bridge in the early hours of Tuesday morning, narrowly missing residents below and sparking widespread alarm.
The incident, as confirmed by Truth Media, occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m., leaving locals thankful but shaken, as the container rolled toward a busy area where people typically gather.
Mabinty Kamara, a resident who lives beneath the bridge on Water Street, recounted the events leading up to the crash. She said that around 1:00 a.m., news spread that police officers were on their way to raid the area, which is known for illicit drug activity.
“Everyone started running in different directions because nobody wanted to be caught,” Kamara said. “About 30 minutes later, we heard a loud sound. It shook the whole place.”
Kamara explained that soon after the noise, residents saw the container rolling toward the area. Fortunately, it became stuck before it reached where people normally gather.
“By God’s grace, nobody was there at that time,” she said. “Everyone had already left the spot. If people were still under the bridge, this story would have been very different.”
The container, which was carrying petroleum jelly grease along with several empty containers, narrowly avoided causing any injuries.
Ruth Bangura, another local resident, confirmed the incident and speculated that the crash might have been caused by a mechanical fault, possibly a brake failure. “It looked like a brake failure,” Bangura said. “But we’re thankful no one was injured. That’s the most important thing.”
Augustine Weekes, another resident, helped secure the goods from the container after the crash. “We were told the container was supposed to be going to Wilkinson Road,” Weekes said. “Residents worked together to empty the container and repack the items until authorities arrived.”
The container is owned by HJM Company Limited, a Freetown-based import and export business. According to residents, the container was en route to Wilkinson Road at the time of the incident.
Local police were already present at the scene, securing the area and ensuring the safety of the surrounding property. Authorities confirmed that no serious injuries were reported and that their role was to maintain order following the accident.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of heavy-duty vehicles in the area, particularly during the festive season when traffic is heavy. Residents are now calling for more stringent safety checks on such vehicles to prevent future accidents.
For the people living around Congo Cross, the container crash serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly disaster can strike—and how narrowly it was avoided. Residents are urging authorities to take stronger precautions to ensure their safety in the future.
