Richard Konteh, aspiring presidential candidate for the All People’s Congress (APC) has issued a public statement addressing the arrest and detention of popular musician and model Zainab Sheriff, describing the situation as one that demands transparency, adherence to due process, and respect for constitutional rights.
In his statement, Dr. Konteh stressed that in a constitutional democracy, the protection of due process, freedom of expression, and reasonable access to bail are not privileges granted by the state but fundamental rights guaranteed by law. He noted that when any citizen, particularly a political activist, is detained under circumstances that are not promptly and clearly explained, it raises legitimate public concern and weakens confidence in the justice system.
“Let me be clear: the rule of law must be respected by all,” he stated. “At the same time, the rule of law must be applied fairly, impartially, and without political colour.”
He cautioned that law enforcement institutions should never be perceived as instruments to intimidate, silence, or discourage dissenting voices. Konteh stressed that democracy is strengthened when it tolerates criticism and manages disagreements through lawful processes and dialogue rather than fear.
He called on the relevant authorities to ensure that Zainab Sheriff is accorded her full constitutional rights, including timely access to legal counsel, clarity on any charges brought against her, and consideration for bail in line with established legal standards. According to him, transparency in the matter is essential to restoring public trust and easing rising political tensions.
Konteh further warned against what he described as the normalisation of arrests and detentions involving activists or opposition voices, noting that such practices risk shrinking civic space and deepening national polarisation. He added that these developments could divert attention from pressing national concerns such as economic hardship, unemployment, and the need for national reconciliation.
He urged restraint, professionalism, and strict respect for due process from all state institutions, describing the moment as one that requires calm reflection rather than escalation.
Concluding his statement, Konteh reaffirmed his commitment to peace, dialogue, and constitutional order, stressing that Sierra Leone’s future depends on the collective ability of its citizens and institutions to protect rights, uphold justice, and choose unity over division.
