The High Court in Freetown was gripped by emotion on Wednesday as harrowing details emerged in the ongoing murder trial of Abdul Kpaka, accused of killing his girlfriend, Sia Fatu Kamara.
Testifying before Justice Alfred T. Ganda, the late Sia Kamara’s younger sister, Christiana Kumba Kamara, broke down in tears as she described what she called a troubling pattern of physical and verbal abuse inflicted on her sister by the accused.
“He always beat and insulted her whenever they had misunderstandings,” she testified, led in evidence by State Prosecutor Yusuf Isaac-Sesay. “It wasn’t just once it was constant.”
The prosecution alleges that Sia Kamara died under suspicious circumstances on August 13, 2024, shortly after spending the night with Kpaka. The accused now faces two charges: murder and perverting the course of justice.
In her testimony, Christiana recounted the final hours she spent with her sister. On the night of August 12, she said Sia was in high spirits, excitedly showing her a flight ticket for a business trip to the United States scheduled for September 3. Later that night, Kpaka came to pick her up.
“I remained in her room that night, unaware it would be the last time I’d see her alive,” Christiana told the court, her voice shaking.
She said she received a call from Kpaka the following morning, asking her to rush to Emergency Hospital. Upon arrival, she learned from medical staff that doctors were trying to resuscitate her sister.
“I tried to go to him, but people held me back,” she said. “When I eventually got close, he cried out, ‘Christo, una kill me wantem… ar no deserve for live.’ But he couldn’t say what really happened.”
According to Christiana, she noticed visible signs of injury on Sia’s body, including a cut on her lip and bloodstains. She said the family prayed over her body while clinging to the hope of a miracle.
Her testimony was cut short as she became overwhelmed with emotion.
Justice Ganda adjourned the trial to Wednesday, July 16, for continuation. The case has drawn widespread public interest, with many following closely as disturbing details about the couple’s relationship emerge.
