In a recent ranking released by the Global Hunger Index (GHI), Sierra Leone is ranked 117 out of 127 countries in 2024.

The ranking assessed data for 127 countries worldwide this year compared to the 125 ranked in 2023. This means that Sierra Leone is 10th most hungry nation in the world. The data also revealed that the West African nation is placed in the serious hunger category with a 31.2 score.

Sierra Leone is gradually eradicating hunger when comparing its 2000 score which is 57.2; scoring 45.2 in 2008 and 32.8 in 2016.

However, the recent data shows that the country is struggling with food security. It also reveals that Sierra Leone is at risk of child stunting, child mortality and child wasting. Experts warn that for some countries, the situation could get worse with climate change continuing to cause drought in some parts of the world.

Meanwhile, the Sierra Leone government is hopeful that with the recent launch of the Feed Salone programme, the country will be able to record high harvesting for food security.
