The Islamic Artists Union, officially known as Sierra Leone Anasheed Brothers (SLAB), held its annual retreat and delegate elections on Sunday, 4 January 2026, at Deep Eye Water.

The retreat, a tradition maintained for over 15 years, provided an opportunity to review the union’s activities from the past year, discuss constitutional updates, and outline the activity plan for 2026. The 2026 plan includes key events such as a VIP dinner, a Family Day Out program, and the launch of new initiatives by several artists, which will be announced in due course.

The highlight of the retreat was the delegate elections for the position of Ameer. Three candidates were initially nominated, with one stepping down, leaving Alie Islam, based in Turkey, and Wurie Barrie, based in Sierra Leone, to contest the position. Out of 19 votes cast, Wurie Barrie won by 12 votes. The result was officially declared by Electoral Commissioner Senesie Mansaray of the Mujahideen Brothers. Wurie Barrie will serve as Ameer of SLAB for the next 18 months, with the possibility of a further 18-month extension, based on the performance of his executive.

In his electoral statement, Ameer Wurie expressed gratitude to the delegates and the union’s membership for their participation and support. “My first commitment will be to unify SLAB as an entity and revive the healthy traditions that have kept us together,” he said. He further urged members to remain dedicated to “dawah through entertainment” and to continue producing work for the enjoyment and benefit of the Ummah.

Wurie also announced Ahmad Richie as his Deputy Ameer, completing his executive team for the upcoming term.

The union’s annual retreat and election underscore SLAB’s ongoing commitment to fostering collaboration among Islamic artists in Sierra Leone while promoting cultural and religious engagement through music and performance.
