A Sierra Leonean woman, Baby Kallon has reportedly been arrested by local security forces after she allegedly attempted to sell her grandson, Vandy Jusu, in a town in Liberia.
The case came to light when Vandy’s mother, Watta Kallon, reported that Baby Kallon had approached the family with an offer to take Vandy to his uncle, Samuka Kallon, in Liberia for job opportunity.
Following discussions and with the family approval, Baby was given Le150 for transportation and she was provided with Vandy’s birth certificate.
Days later, according to Watta, she received distressing news from a relative in Liberia who informed her that Baby Kallon was apprehended by police while attempting to sell her grandson.
Investigations revealed that Baby Kallon interacted with a woman named Massah Kabu Nemah, who presented herself as a potential buyer. Nemah alerted the local community police, including officer Nemah Fafoe, who went undercover and contacted the accused.
In an effort to gather evidence, it was reported that the police recorded conversations with Baby Kallon, during which she allegedly requested two bags of “Ghana Must Go” filled with money in dollar currency, along with two expensive mobile phones and four motorbikes.
The police later confirmed Baby’s relationship to Vandy by examining his birth certificate, which was provided by Baby. Upon confirming her intention, she was reportedly arrested, and was transported to Mano River Congo, where she made her initial court appearance at the Mano River Magistrate Court.
Reports further revealed that Baby Kallon, who resided in Kenema, attempted to sell her grandson in order to repay a loan of Thirty-Five Thousand Leones (Nle35,000) from a Micro Finance Institution.
This incident has raised serious concerns regarding the protection of vulnerable children and the desperate measures some individuals may take to alleviate financial burdens.
