Sierra Leone’s Minister of Social Welfare, Melrose Karminty, met with Ruchira Kamboj, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on the sidelines of the ongoing 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

Their discussions focused on shared challenges in disability inclusion and combating drug and substance abuse. Minister Karminty outlined the difficulties Sierra Leone faces in addressing these issues, including the recent rise in drug use. She emphasized her ministry’s efforts, including the establishment of a new rehabilitation center for addicts.

Karminty highlighted President Bio’s commitment to supporting both young people and families affected by disability.

Ambassador Kamboj underscored the long-standing friendly relations between India and Sierra Leone. She expressed India’s support in tackling disability and addiction, acknowledging that drug abuse is a serious global concern.

The CSW is the UN’s primary platform for promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.
