The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) organized its Annual Iftar Programme observed Ramadan on Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
During the event, representing the president of SLAJ, Secretary General of the Association, Alhaji Manika Kamara, extended warm Ramadan greetings to all their Muslim colleagues and friends while also praying for Ramadan to bring peace, spiritual renewal, and abundant blessings on the membership to the membership of the Association.
“It is unfortunate that our distinguished President, Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, is unable to be here with us due to other equally important engagements, but he has asked me as Secretary General to deliver brief remarks on behalf of our noble Association.” He stated.
“This year’s theme, ‘Ramadan in the Digital Age: The Positive and Negative Impacts of Digital Technology on Ramadan’ is a timely and relevant one,” Secretary General Manika Kamara highlighted.
“We live in an era where digital technology shapes nearly every aspect of our lives, including our faith and devotion. While technology offers immense opportunities for learning, connection, and engagement with Islamic teachings, it also presents distractions and challenges that can affect the essence of Ramadan reflection, self-discipline, and a deeper connection with Allah.’’ he said.
He also, added that journalists, must be conscious of their role in the digital space, using technology responsibly to share credible and uplifting messages, counter misinformation, and promote unity and understanding, particularly in this sensitive electioneering period (the SLAJ elections).
“At a time when emotions can run high, let us uphold the principles of truth, fairness, and responsible journalism in serving our members, our Association, and the people of Sierra Leone’’ he said.
Additionally, he stated that he would also take this opportunity to acknowledge their Christian colleagues who are currently observing Lent, a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection similar in spirit to Ramadan in Christianity. “This serves as a powerful reminder of our shared values of faith, sacrifice, and devotion, reinforcing the importance of religious tolerance and unity in our profession and society,” he said.
The Association rendered their “special appreciation” goes to Islamic cleric, Sheikh Farouk Bah, who was among the attendees of the this occasion as a guest preacher.
“His dedication to deepening our understanding of this sacred month and its significance has been invaluable, and we are truly grateful for his unwavering support over the years,” the SLAJ Secretar-General said.
He ended by commending the organizers of the annual SLAJ Iftar for their dedication in bringing journalists together, strengthening their bond as a professional body, and fostering interfaith harmony.
