Spanish Humanitarian Organisation, Yirewa is set to boost farmers in Moyamba District with a tractor to assist in their farming.

The organization’s contact in Sierra Leone, Osman Koroma said they will be working in villages such as Magbogsei, Bathbai, Lilhihamma, and Rotifunk all in Moyamba District.

“The organization has bought a tractor from Spain through a campaign launched last year,” Koroma said.

He added that the buying of the tractor was a request made by local farmers in the district to some visiting members of the organization.

He stated that the farmers told the organization that they encounter difficulties in providing food in the wet season because of the medieval tools they have.

Koroma said Yirewa Association is registered in Spain and Sierra Leone as a local organization and that they have been assisting the needy in villages across the country with medical assistance.

A good number of locals in rural Sierra Leone are engaged in farming but the country is still considered by the World Food Programme (WFP) to be food insecure.

The country’s president, Julius Maada Bio announced last month during a tour to the district that his government will focus on agriculture if he wins his second term.

The West African nation will go to the polls this June in a multi-tier election.
