Three individuals, including two police officers and a community safety volunteer, sustained gunshot wounds during a shooting incident at the Rogballa checkpoint in Lunsar in the early hours of Wednesday, 7 January 2026.

According to a flash report from the Lunsar Police Division, the incident occurred at about 02:47 hours while police personnel were on night duty at the checkpoint.

An unknown gunman reportedly opened fire on officers on duty, resulting in injuries to those present.

The injured officers were identified as Police Constable (PC) 20078 Tamba John Bull, attached to the Intelligence Integrated Service (IIS), who sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, and PC 20112 Wudie Vallie of the General Duties (GD), who suffered gunshot wounds beneath both feet.

A community safety volunteer, Usifu Osman Sesay, who was assisting with holding the checkpoint rope, also sustained a gunshot wound to the hip/back area.

Following the incident, suspicion was directed at PC 23222 Frederick Mukeh Moigboi, who was reportedly armed and on duty at the time. Police authorities confirmed that the suspect has been apprehended by the Northwest OSD Coordinator, Superintendent Gaya, and is currently in custody as investigations continue.

Police also recovered twenty-three (23) empty bullet shells scattered at various positions within the checkpoint area, which have been taken as part of ongoing investigations.

The two injured officers and the community volunteer were initially taken to Mabesseneh Hospital, where they are reportedly responding to treatment. PC Tamba John Bull was later referred to the Emergency Hospital in Freetown at about 09:20 hours for further medical attention.

The Sierra Leone Police have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting and to ensure that appropriate action is taken in line with the law.
