Authorities at the Kenewa Checkpoint along the Kailahun-Pendembu Highway have arrested two individuals in connection with a suspected human trafficking operation.

The suspects, identified as Salaimatu Kargbo and Ibrahim Kargbo, both residents of Rokupa, Freetown, were taken into custody on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

The arrests occurred when police officers intercepted a vehicle carrying sixteen passengers, consisting mostly of women and children, at the checkpoint. The group, ranging in age from three to twenty-six, was reportedly being transported to Mali under suspicious circumstances.

Initial investigations revealed that all the victims were from Freetown. The case has now been transferred to the Family Support Unit at the Kailahun Police Station for further investigation.

Authorities are focusing on uncovering the full extent of the trafficking network and ensuring the safety and welfare of the rescued individuals.
