The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has funded a two-day strategic communication workshop to support the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) in its transition from a force to a service.
Held from December 10 to 11, 2024, at the Sierra Palm Hotel in Freetown, the workshop targeted police officers in media and communication roles, equipping them with skills to engage effectively with the public and counter misinformation.
Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Esther Kettor Dukuray thanked UNDP for its support, emphasizing the importance of communication in building public trust. AIG Sahr Yomba Senesie highlighted the workshop’s role in enhancing transparency, accountability, and public engagement during this transformation.
Ilemoboia Ademola-Adelehin, UNDP’s Gender and Inclusion Specialist, outlined the organization’s broader efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s justice and security systems. She stressed the importance of transitioning the SLP into a community-centered, responsive, and accountable institution aligned with national development goals.
The training focused on improving participants’ communication skills, social media management, and strategic engagement. It also emphasized the need for police officers to serve as effective communicators to shape public perception positively.
This initiative is a critical step in the SLP’s journey toward becoming a trusted and community-focused police service, with continued support from UNDP ensuring alignment with Sierra Leone’s development priorities.
