In the aftermath of severe flooding, the KDEC Primary School, samu Chiefdom, Kambia District is in urgent need of support.
Over 1,137 pupils, along with their headmistress, teachers, and parents, are desperately appealing to the World Food Program (WFP) and humanitarian organizations for food supplies, after the disaster destroyed their homes, food sources, and school materials.
Yeliboya Island, which relies solely on fishing due to the absence of crop farming, has been devastated by two consecutive weeks of flooding.
Fishing activities have been halted, leaving the entire community struggling to survive. The children, now facing starvation, are unable to concentrate on their education, leading to increased absenteeism and truancy.
Headmistress Madam Hawa Kamara described the dire situation: many of the school’s teaching and learning materials were destroyed by the floods, and without fishing activities, families are struggling to feed their children.
She made a heartfelt appeal to the WFP to reinstate the school feeding program, emphasizing that Yeliboya Island’s children need this support more than ever.
“We are being left behind,” she said, calling on the Government, the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), and other agencies to help rehabilitate the school and provide immediate food aid.
Without urgent intervention, the future of Yeliboya’s children remains at serious risk.
