When this system was brought to Parliament for approval by Honourable members of the well, the bill was disapproved by many. This among other reasons kept keep with the thoughts that this system will not come into effect.
There were reactions from politicians and reputable lawyers. On one publication by Politico, Fatmata Sorie was among the lawyers that rejected the system and disclosed that changing the electoral system has little or nothing in achieving true democracy and national cohesion. She continued that, stakeholders should fix the structures and not electoral system.
As the elections are just around the corner, ECSL Commissioner, Mohamed Konneh has today on her Twitter handle informed Sierra Leoneans and the world that 2023 Elections will base on the PR system.
“In accordance with section 38A of 1991 const of S/L, 2023 elections will be based on PR system. The Commission will release public notice at the PPLC meeting tomorrow 21/10/22,” Mohamed Konneh twitted.
Proportional Representation (PR) system is an electoral system in which the distribution of seats corresponds closely with the proportion of the total votes cast for each party. That is, the total number of votes cast in favour of a particular party will determine the number of parliamentary seats the party gets. And it is the party that does the selection of who is to represent the various constituencies and not the people like in the case of the first past and post system.
