A three-week verification exercise conducted by government auditors at the Makeni Government Hospital has discovered several anomalies in the hospital.
The verification team discovered that twenty-eight (28) pin code nurses have abandon the hospital for greener pasture but receiving salaries at the end of every month. The affected nurses did not appear before the audit team for verification during their three weeks stay there.
The exercise looked at the management and operations of several Units at the Makeni Government Hospital with a view to know their challenges to ensure effective services delivery.
Some of these pin code nurses are also accused of working in private hospitals instead of government hospitals contrary to law.
Presenting its report to senior officials of the Hospital in including the Medical Superintendent and Hospital Secretary last Friday March 11th 2022, the team discovered that some health workers are conniving with patients by demanding money from them contrary to the Free Health Care policy.
It was discovered that several nurses have travelled out of the country but at the same time receiving salaries from the consolidated revenue fund, thereby making government to lose millions of leones annually.
According to New Vision Newspaper, the audit exercise revealed that the X-ray machine has not been working for the last couple of months because the battery is not good but that nothing has been done to replace it.
The audit team observed that the Compressor in the Mortuary freezer is faulty and that the mechanics who went to repair it requested for three million leones to buy the part, but it is yet to be provided.
“From January to February 2022, the mortuary has paid five million leones (Le5M) to the Hospital management but that the authorities are yet to replace it,” a senior medical officer candied in this medium.
The team urged the hospital authorities to take note of the issues raised with a view to addressing them quickly.
The Medical Superintendent is quoted to have said that he has just taken over the issues raised within the shortest possible time.
Meanwhile, both the Hospital Secretary and medical Superintendent refused to respond to these issues when contacted by this medium despite text and WhatsApp messages sent to them.
