A total of 42 inmates from the Makeni Correctional Center have graduated from the University of Makeni (UNIMAK) under a prison education program led by Unisa Patrick Kamara, a senior academic in the Department of Development Studies.
The graduating group included 39 men and 3 women who completed their studies while serving sentences at the correctional facility.
The program, which is part of a broader learning project run by the university, is aimed at expanding access to education within correctional centers.
The initiative is coordinated by Unisa Patrick Kamara, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at UNIMAK. Kamara, a lecturer with over thirteen years of experience, previously headed the Department of Development Studies for a decade.
UNIMAK, a private university located in Sierra Leone’s Northern Province, was officially recognized in 2009. It continues to run outreach and support programs focused on community education and helping people return to society.
This new group of graduates adds to previous efforts by the university to bring higher education opportunities into the correctional system.
