The Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, in partnership with the Electoral Commission Sierra Leone (ECSL), has set key dates for the upcoming paramount chieftaincy elections in Perri and Barrie Chiefdoms, located in the Pujehun District.
The Declaration of Rights for the Perri Chiefdom paramount chieftaincy election is scheduled for 16 September 2024, with polling day confirmed for 2 October 2024. In Barrie Chiefdom, the Stakeholders’ Engagement will be held on 19 September 2024, followed by Assessments from 23 to 25 September 2024, and a Revision period from 2 to 4 September 2024. The election dates for Barrie Chiefdom will be announced after these procedures.
Pujehun District Officer Yankuba Joebai assured the public of full readiness for the elections, citing close coordination with the police to ensure security. 820 tribal authorities are expected to vote in Perri Chiefdom. Joebai reminded candidates that campaigning is prohibited until after the Declaration of Rights, as per the local chieftaincy act. He also outlined the requirements to become a tribal authority, emphasizing the need for maturity, experience, and being a taxpayer.
Joebai urged residents of both chiefdoms to remain patient and maintain peace throughout the election process. He emphasized that the elections are being closely monitored to guarantee transparency, with funding provided by the Government of Sierra Leone through the ECSL.
The Declaration of Rights and Polling date for Barrie Chiefdom will be announced following the completion of the assessment and revision process.
