President Julius Maada Bio has been endorsed as the new Chair of the Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) at the 35th Ordinary Session of Heads of State and Government of the AU in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia.
President Bio now has the mandate to lead and encourage his Peers to observe and respect political, economic and corporate governance values in their respective countries.
Professor David Francis has this to say, “President Bio’s endorsement is in recognition of the meteoric rise of Sierra Leone on the Global Stage and as a Country of standing respected by and in the Community of States.”
Chair of the AU Committee of 10 for the Reform of the UN Security Council: The President of the Republic of Sierra Leone is the current Chair of the Committee with mandate to advocate and canvass the African Common Position on United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reform.
ECOWAS and AU Endorsed Candidate for UN Security Council Seat Bid: Sierra Leone’s the sole candidate from West Africa for the UNSC Seat bid in the Non-Permanent Category. The Candidacy was endorsed by ECOWAS and the African Union.
Arms trade treaty 2020/2021: Sierra Leone held the Chair of the state Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty. During its tenure, Sierra Leone contributed to developing global rules for regulation and control of conventional weapons. particularly Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW).
Sierra Leone’s Candidate to the International Law Commission (ILC) of the UN: The Candidate nominated by Sierra Leone received the support of 169 UN. member states out of 192 valid votes. The Candidate received the most votes of all the candidates nominated by states in the African Group and the second highest vote overall of all 48 candidates presented for election by the UN General Assembly. Sierra Leone’s Candidate was one of the 5 candidates from the African continent and the successful candidate elected from the African Group of States,
International Recognition for abolition of the Death Penalty: Sierra Leone is among the 15 Member States of the African Union tasked with the responsibility of maintaining peace and security on the continent.
Global Peace Index: In 2021. Sierra Leone was ranked countries by the Global Peace Index. Sierra Leone had an overall score of 1.856 in the 2021 ranking of peaceful countries in the word.
International Recognition for abolition of the Death Penalty: Sierra Leone has been Iauded for the abolition of the Death Penalty. The Deputy State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, Mr. Johannes Matyassy indicated Switzerland’s commitment to partner with Sierra Leone to get more countries abolish the death penalty.
