The Africanist Press has made stark revelations on the rent allowances paid to major political appointees, judges and and government consultants.
According to Chernor Bah, he alleged that the following list provides individual details of rent allowances paid to 61 political appointees, including judges, State House Consultants, and heads of departments in newly created agencies. The list includes 29 judges, 15 consultants, and 17 other political appointees across MDAs.
These listed officials were all appointed between June 2018 and December 2019.
The aggregate rent allowances paid to the 61 political appointees in the Africanist Press sample list amounted to Le4,977,353,041.00 in 2019 alone.
They also alleged that they discovered that cumulative rent allowances paid to these 61 officials from FY2018 to FY2021 amounted to Le19,909,412,164.00; an amount that equals the combined monthly salaries of 15,315 secondary school teachers.
Africanist Press also found that cumulative withholding taxes to the tune of Le1,990,941,216.40 were never deducted from the rent allowances paid to these 61 political appointees; a significant loss of revenue to the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF).
