Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, visited the Mamuntha and Magbass rice farms in Tonkolili District as part of his nationwide field tour ahead of this year’s World Food Day celebration and the second anniversary of the Feed Salone initiative.
During the visit, Dr. Kpaka met with farmer Bisman Kamara, who is cultivating more than 500 hectares of rice at Mamuntha. Kamara’s farm is projected to yield about four metric tons per hectare roughly 80 bags per hectare.
According to the Minister, Kamara’s progress from smallholder to large-scale farming reflects the impact of the Food System Resilience Program (FSRP) under Feed Salone, which seeks to drive Sierra Leone’s rice self-sufficiency efforts.
Dr. Kpaka commended Kamara for his achievements and encouraged him to expand his operations, noting that the Ministry will continue to provide support through modern machinery such as combine harvesters to boost productivity and reduce post-harvest losses.
Kamara, in turn, called on Sierra Leoneans to view agriculture as a profitable and sustainable venture. He expressed appreciation to the Ministry and its partners for the support that enabled him to scale up to large-scale rice farming.
