Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Brima Kanneh, Regional Commander for Freetown-East, has appealed for dialogue and restraint as truck and lorry drivers operating at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay consider a sit-at-home strike.
The call followed a meeting held on Monday, November 3, 2025, between the police, the Drivers’ Union, and the Sierra Leone Port and Harbour Association (SLPHA).
The session aimed to address drivers’ grievances and find common ground to prevent disruption to port operations and the wider economy.
During the discussions, union representatives including Musa Kargbo (Acting President, I.T.O.A), Alie Kargbo (Drivers’ Union Secretary), and Alieu Carew (Chairman, Drivers’ Union Water Quay) outlined several challenges facing their members. These included difficulties in moving trucks in and out of the quay, persistent congestion, delays, unsafe parking spaces, and poor working conditions. They further requested that eastward movement remain unrestricted and that the westward movement time be adjusted from 10 p.m. to an earlier hour.
Responding on behalf of Freetown Terminal, Darrell Coker assured drivers that efforts would be made to address the concerns raised. He also advised drivers to ensure their documentation is complete before joining the operational queue to avoid further delays.
CSP LUC Emmanuel Kpulun proposed the establishment of a perimeter checkpoint along Jenneh Wright Road and Fourah Bay Road to verify documentation and ensure only compliant trucks access the quay.
AIG Kanneh, in his closing remarks, commended all parties for their cooperative engagement and reaffirmed his commitment to forwarding the issues discussed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for further consideration. He cautioned against any industrial action that could disrupt public order or economic activity, encouraging continuous dialogue as the best path to resolution.
All parties pledged to share the outcomes of the meeting with their members and to maintain collaboration in ensuring order and efficiency within port operations.
