Sierra Leone’s new national carrier, Air Sierra Leone has failed to make its inaugural flight from London Gatwick Airport.

The airline had initially planned to launch its services on December 2nd, at Gatwick Airport offering a direct connection between London and Freetown.

Sierraloaded‘s investigation reveals that the airline has not yet initiated flight bookings on its website, www.flysierraleone.com. The airline intended to launch bookings for its new service on October 18, 2024, but has postponed this due to technical difficulties.

In a press release, Air Sierra Leone apologized for the inconvenience caused to customers and emphasized its commitment to providing excellent service. The airline’s team is reportedly working to resolve the technical problems as quickly as possible.

“We understand the importance of this route to our valued customers and appreciate your patience as we address these matters,” the statement read. “Air Sierra Leone remains dedicated to delivering on our promise of world-class service, and we will provide updates as soon as possible.”

The delay comes amid reports raising safety concerns. One of Air Sierra Leone’s planned aircraft, an Embraer 145, was previously involved in a runway skidding incident in Lagos, Nigeria.

However, the airline has addressed these concerns, stating that the aircraft has since undergone and cleared regulatory inspections.

“On 20th November 2024, the 50-seater aircraft has safely arrived at Freetown International Airport. It will now undergo additional regulatory checks by the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) to ensure compliance and operational readiness. Once cleared, the Embraer 145 will officially launch its maiden regional flights, covering the Freetown-Abuja-Accra route as part of the first phase of Air Sierra Leone’s business plan.” a statement by the company said.

Air Sierra Leone has assured the public that they will receive updates on revised flight schedules, ticket prices, and additional destinations soon.
