In a significant moment for Sierra Leone’s aviation sector, Air Sierra Leone’s aircraft successfully landed at the Freetown International Airport today after departing Abuja earlier this morning.
The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has confirmed that all regulatory checks have been completed, and all necessary documentation has been signed and stamped, ensuring the airline’s readiness to commence operations.
This development comes on the heels of the recent unveiling of Air Sierra Leone by the Minister of Transport and Aviation, Alhaji Fanday Turay.
Speaking earlier this month, the minister expressed optimism about the airline’s revival, emphasizing its role in enhancing connectivity and economic growth.
The inaugural flight is scheduled for December 2, 2024, departing from London’s Gatwick Airport and marking the start of a direct six-hour journey between London and Freetown.
Air Sierra Leone’s operations will initially utilize a UK Air Operating Certificate (AOC) as part of its launch strategy, with plans to transition to a Sierra Leonean AOC in the near future.

This move aligns with the government’s broader vision of establishing a fully independent national carrier to represent Sierra Leone on the global stage.
The airline will commence with a fleet comprising three aircraft: a 50-seat Embraer and two Boeing 737s, capable of accommodating 149 and 189 passengers, respectively.
These aircraft are expected to meet both domestic and international travel demands while ensuring comfort and efficiency.
