Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has expressed gratitude for the public’s support and outlined the Freetown City Council’s (FCC) key achievements and plans for 2025.

“Despite the numerous challenges we faced, I am incredibly proud of what we have collectively achieved,” declared Mayor Aki-Sawyerr. “Through the unwavering support of our residents, the generosity of our partners, and the tireless efforts of our dedicated team, we have made significant strides in transforming our city.”

The Mayor highlighted several significant accomplishments in 2024, including:

Improved Water Access: Installation of 24 solar-powered water kiosks and the commencement of work on 44 additional water points across the city.

Enhanced Infrastructure: Completion of the new Wilberforce Market, construction of cemetery fencing, and the development of new schools.

Urban Regeneration: Initiation of the Central Business District Regeneration project and continued efforts in the “FreetownTheTreeTown” campaign.

However, the Mayor acknowledged the challenges posed by rapid urbanization and the growing influence of the “kush” epidemic among youth.

“We are advocating for the devolution of crucial urban management functions to local councils, which will empower us to address these issues more effectively.” she stated.

Looking ahead to 2025, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr reiterated her commitment to creating 120,000 decent jobs for women and youth by 2028 through initiatives in climate action, heritage tourism, the digital economy, and human capital development.
