Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has issued a public appeal for residents of Freetown to join forces with the Freetown City Council in maintaining a clean and healthy city.
In a video message shared on her Facebook page, the Mayor emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in achieving the council’s goals of transforming Freetown and improving the lives of its citizens.
“These objectives will not be achievable without the collective effort to come together,” she stated.
Aki-Sawyers urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly and utilize the litter bins provided throughout the city. She highlighted the yellow bins as a crucial resource for preventing trash accumulation on the streets, clarifying that these bins are not intended for household waste.
The Mayor also shed light on the council’s efforts to combat street littering, including the daily sweeping of 110 streets from Monday to Saturday. She encouraged residents to utilize the authorized Freetown City Council waste collection services, which employ trained personnel and efficient waste management practices.
Mayor Aki-Sawyer attributed a significant portion of the city’s litter problem to unauthorized waste collectors, often referred to as “Clean Salone,” who frequently dump trash improperly. She urged businesses, institutions, and hospitals to engage the council’s approved waste collection services, including the use of tricycles for waste removal.
The Mayor expressed concern about the substantial amount of waste accumulating on Lumley Beach and other coastal areas, highlighting the council’s ongoing efforts to address illegal dumping sites and maintain cleanliness throughout Freetown.
“As Mayor of Freetown, I urge all residents to support our collective efforts to keep our city clean, in line with the #TransformFreetown #TransformingLives plan,” she concluded.
