The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, has said she remains committed to serving residents of the capital despite her absence from official duties, following what she described as a “surprise” visit from market women across the city.
In a statement, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr said she received “an unexpected but lovely surprise visit from Market Chairladies from across Freetown” earlier in the day. According to her, the women represented several key markets, including Kroo Town Road, Congo Town Market, Ferry Junction Peace Market, Lumley Street Market and other trading hubs.
She noted that the delegation came to express appreciation for her work in improving market conditions in the city. “The women wanted me to know that even though I am not at the office, they appreciate the work that I have done and continue to do in their markets,” the mayor stated.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr reaffirmed her dedication to her role, emphasizing that her administration’s work would continue once ongoing political concerns are resolved. “As Mayor, I remain steadfast in my commitment to delivering for the people of Freetown,” she said.
She added that her return to full official duties is tied to broader political developments, specifically concerns raised by the All People’s Congress (APC) regarding electoral reforms.
“This work will continue with renewed momentum once the concerns about electoral reforms raised by the APC are addressed and all elected APC leaders resume their official duties,” she stated.
The statement comes amid a continuing impasse involving APC officials, which has affected the participation of some elected representatives in government functions.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s remarks reflect both ongoing political tensions and expressions of grassroots support from sections of the city’s informal economy, particularly market women who play a central role in Freetown’s daily commerce.
No further details were provided about the duration of the mayor’s absence from office or when a resolution to the electoral reform concerns is expected.
