Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, launched the construction of the King Jimmy Market in the heart of the city’s Central Business District.
According to Mayor Aki-Sawyerr, the construction of the market is a core component of the Strengthening Urban Governance and Local Economic Development (SURGE) Project.
King Jimmy Market is one of Freetown’s oldest markets and holds considerable historical significance. It is located adjacent to the De Ruyter Stone and the “slave steps and manacles,” which continue to tell a story of the city’s history centuries after the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.

Speaking at the launch, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed excitement over the project, noting that, like all trading spaces, King Jimmy Market is more than just a marketplace.
She said the market is a place where livelihoods are built, families are supported and dreams are made possible.

The Mayor also expressed her sincere appreciation to the European Union in Sierra Leone for supporting the project with €479,964, while the Freetown City Council (FCC) is contributing €25,282.
She further thanked Deputy Mayor Kweku Lisk Esq., the Market Committee, Councillors and FCC staff for their commitment and support in bringing the project to this important milestone.
