Freetown’s Mayor, Yvonne Aki Sawyerr, celebrated a significant milestone as construction works for the new Wilberforce Market resumed on Thursday, March 13th.
In a ceremony attended by city officials and stakeholders, the project contractor received the final payment of NLe1.769 million to expedite the completion of the market by the end of May.
The Mayor expressed her delight at the progress, emphasizing the positive impact the new market will have on the Wilberforce Village community and its surroundings. Scheduled to open in June, the revamped market promises to provide a secure trading space for market vendors, particularly women, while also alleviating traffic congestion in the area.
The new Wilberforce Market will feature a three-story structure, with the ground floor dedicated to the sale of wet goods, the second-floor housing individual shops, and the third floor serving as a much-needed community center.
Mayor Aki Sawyerr credited the funding for the project to the payment of property rates and business licenses by the citizens of Freetown. She expressed gratitude to all Freetonians who contributed to making the construction possible through their compliance with local taxes and fees.
Highlighting the commitment of the Freetown City Council to the ongoing initiative to #TransformFreetown, Mayor Aki Sawyerr urged residents to continue fulfilling their civic responsibilities by paying their property rates, business licenses, and local taxes. She emphasized that collective participation is essential for the city’s development and progress.
