Alliance of She Leads which comprises Defence for Children, Plan International, Women’s Forum, and FEMNET have organized two days of training for girls-led groups and CSOs on the Maputo Protocols.
She Leads is a consortium that works towards empowering women and girls to take up leadership roles and increasing sustained influence on decision-making in formal and informal institutions.
The training was held on August 29th and 30th at Plan International Conference Hall.
The purpose of the training was to educate girls
and young women on alternative or shadow reporting on the Maputo Protocol and how they can collect information and data for report writing.
The Maputo Protocol is an international human rights instrument established by the African Union. It guarantees comprehensive rights to women including the right to take part in the political process, social, and political equality with men, improved autonomy in their reproductive health decisions, and an end to female genital mutilation.
The instrument speaks in eight thematic areas which include Equality and non-discrimination, Protection of women from violence, Rights relating to marriage, Health and reproductive rights, Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, Right to Peace, Protection of women in armed conflicts, and Right if specially protected women’s group.
At the end of the training, they were able to identify and analyze the legislations, policies, campaigns, commitments, and administrative decisions of the Government in the implementation of the Protocol in Sierra Leone.
They also mapped out the gaps and challenges of each intervention which will be put together in a report.
