Sierra Leone’s Presidential Spokesman, Alpha Kanu, has defended the government’s handling of drug trafficking, saying authorities are taking firm action against illicit drugs entering the country and should be commended for their efforts.

Speaking on the government’s anti-drug campaign, Kanu said Sierra Leone has been making significant progress in intercepting and destroying illegal narcotics discovered at the nation’s ports.

According to him, the administration of President Julius Maada Bio has adopted a policy of immediately destroying confiscated drugs instead of storing them within the country.

We are doing well in combating drug trafficking in the country,” Kanu stated. “When traffickers ship illicit drugs to the port, we catch those drug containers and burn the illicit drugs because that is the right thing to do. We don’t waste time with such things.”

He added that the public should recognize and appreciate the government’s efforts in tackling narcotics trafficking and protecting the country’s image internationally.

I think the people should praise us for doing a wonderful job which is giving a good name to the country,” he said.

Kanu also addressed reports concerning a ship intercepted in Spain that was allegedly linked to Sierra Leone. He said the Sierra Leonean authorities had not received any official communication from Spanish authorities regarding the matter.

On the area of the ship which was caught in Spain and alleged to have come from Sierra Leone, we don’t know about it,” Kanu explained. “I was told about that news by a friend on WhatsApp. Spain authorities never told us about it.

The presidential spokesman maintained that the government remains committed to restoring Sierra Leone’s international reputation under President Bio’s leadership.

According to Kanu, the administration’s crackdown on illicit drugs forms part of broader efforts to improve the country’s image abroad.

President Bio said he would rebrand the good name of the country and he is presently doing it in a good way,” Kanu said. “The people should thank or praise him for his wonderful works because we are now burning illicit drugs; we don’t keep them in our country.

Authorities in Sierra Leone have in recent years intensified operations against drug trafficking amid growing regional and international concerns over the movement of narcotics through West Africa.

However, no official statement has yet been issued by Spanish authorities directly linking the reported ship incident to Sierra Leone.
