Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the United States, Amara Sheikh Mohammed Sowa, has officially presented his Letters of Credence to U.S. President Donald J. Trump, formally accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

In a ceremony held on July 24, 2025, Ambassador Sowa conveyed greetings and best wishes from President Brigadier Dr. Julius Maada Bio to President Trump. The ambassador emphasized President Bio’s hopes for President Trump’s continued good health and success in enhancing the lives of the American people.

The presentation marked a reaffirmation of the longstanding historical and diplomatic ties between Sierra Leone and the United States, with roots dating back to the era of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. These connections are reflected today in the presence of the Gullah community in South Carolina and Georgia, descendants of West Africans, including Sierra Leoneans.

During his remarks, Ambassador Sowa highlighted Sierra Leone’s ongoing development under the leadership of President Bio, referencing the “Big Five Game Changers” program. This initiative focuses on governance, anti-corruption efforts, and creating a favorable environment for business and investment.

The ambassador also expressed gratitude for U.S. support to Sierra Leone in sectors such as health, education, peace, and national cohesion. He praised the United States’ longstanding contributions to Sierra Leone’s development and governance reform.

At the multilateral level, Ambassador Sowa emphasized shared values between the two nations, particularly in promoting sustainable development, peace, human rights, and adherence to international law through institutions like the United Nations.

The embassy reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening diplomatic relations and fostering mutual cooperation between the Republic of Sierra Leone and the United States of America.
