U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone Bryan D. Hunt has issued a strong warning against attempting to enter the United States illegally, emphasizing the severe penalties and dangers associated with such an act.

In an op-ed shared with Sierraloaded on April 7, 2025, from the U.S. Embassy in Freetown, Ambassador Hunt reiterated the Trump administration’s commitment to enforcing U.S. immigration laws.

The Ambassador stressed that under President Trump’s directive to ensure America’s safety and prosperity, those who attempt to enter the U.S. unlawfully, provide false information for visas, work without authorization, or overstay their permitted time will face significant consequences. These include potential jail sentences, deportation, and a permanent ban from future U.S. visa eligibility.

Ambassador Hunt directly addressed individuals with family or friends currently residing illegally in the United States, urging them to advise their loved ones to return home.

He refuted the notion that individuals can enter the U.S. undetected, highlighting the Trump administration’s efforts to bolster border security. According to the op-ed, illegal border crossings saw a dramatic 94% decrease in February 2025 compared to the same period last year, while arrests of undocumented immigrants within the U.S. surged by 627%.

“If you try to cross a U.S. border or remain in the United States illegally, you will be caught, detained, and sent back,” Ambassador Hunt stated. “You may also be banned from ever returning or face fines and criminal charges.”

The Ambassador also cautioned against visa fraud, labeling it a serious crime. He explained that using fake documents, lying on applications, or overstaying visas will result in punishment and potential permanent ineligibility for future U.S. entry.

Furthermore, the op-ed highlighted the perilous journey undertaken by those attempting to enter the U.S. illegally. Ambassador Hunt warned that criminal organizations, cartels, and human traffickers exploit vulnerable migrants, subjecting them to violence, extortion, and assault, with many not surviving the journey. He noted that the U.S. is collaborating with other nations to intercept and return individuals attempting illegal entry before they reach the U.S. border.

The U.S. government is also cracking down on those facilitating illegal immigration, including smugglers, human traffickers, and even foreign government officials. Ambassador Hunt cited Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent announcement of a new visa restriction policy targeting foreign officials who fail to assist in curbing illegal immigration. This policy expands on existing restrictions for those in the transportation and tourism sectors.

Concluding his message, Ambassador Hunt emphasized the significant risks associated with illegal immigration, asserting that they far outweigh any perceived benefits. He warned of potential loss of life, victimization by criminals, and the creation of a record that could negatively impact the individual’s and their family’s future.

“The choice is clear – follow the law, and do not risk your safety, your family, or your future,” Ambassador Hunt urged.
