Residents of Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, are increasingly expressing concern over frequent power outages experienced despite the implementation of an electricity roster by the Electricity Distribution Supply Authority (EDSA).
The sudden power interruptions have reportedly led to the destruction of homes and damage to electronic devices and appliances, with some residents citing devastating fires as a consequence. Concerns have also been raised regarding the qualifications and experience of volunteers recruited by EDSA to provide electricity services.
In interviews, some citizens have criticized EDSA’s management for allegedly relying heavily on volunteers, who reportedly constitute 70% of the workforce, instead of hiring competent personnel.
Impoverished communities such as Moa Wharf, Susans Bay, and Ackram are particularly affected, with residents reportedly enduring days without electricity due to faulty connections and overloaded meters, increasing the risk of fires in these areas.
Following a recent surge in fire incidents in Freetown, residents in these communities are urging the government to intervene and address the persistent power supply issues. They emphasize the urgent need for authorities to take action to improve the situation and prevent further damage and hardship for the affected populations.
