The All People’s Congress (APC) has voiced strong concerns regarding what it describes as government interference in the continued detention of its supporters, who were arrested on October 15 during a peaceful meeting at the party’s headquarters with international moral guarantors.

In a letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, the APC expressed frustration over the prolonged detention of its members, alleging that it violates legal protocols and undermines the ongoing national reconciliation efforts.

According to the letter, the APC appreciates the role of the police in maintaining security but claims that external pressure from the government has resulted in the detention of these individuals beyond the legal 72-hour limit.

The party further accused both the police and the government of attempting to escalate the situation by preparing court charges, a move they believe is intended to give the false impression of the severity of the situation.

The APC referenced Resolution 4 of the Unity Agreement, which calls for the release of political detainees, emphasizing that the government’s actions are contrary to the agreement.

The party insists that the resolution not only mandates the release of those detained before the agreement but also seeks to prevent any further politically motivated arrests.

The letter, copied to international moral guarantors, development partners, the Peace Commission, and the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), criticizes the government’s actions as detrimental to the spirit of national unity and reconciliation.

The APC urged the police to act independently and avoid succumbing to political pressures, calling for the immediate release of the detained individuals.

The APC warned that further escalation of the issue could harm the country’s progress toward peace and unity, particularly as efforts are being made to mend political divisions in the wake of the recent Unity Agreement.
