Representatives from the All People’s Congress (APC), the country’s main opposition party, met with Attorney General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay this week to push for the swift implementation of Resolution 4 of the Agreement for National Unity.

The resolution is seen as a critical step toward facilitating the release of detainees and ensuring the safe return of exiles, including former President Ernest Bai Koroma, who is currently in Nigeria.

Sources close to the discussions revealed that the Bio-led administration has dropped all charges against Koroma, paving the way for his anticipated return to Sierra Leone. The former president has been in Nigeria since January 2024, when he was granted permission by the High Court to seek medical treatment abroad for three months.

In a statement following the meeting, Attorney General Sesay described the talks as “constructive” and emphasized the shared commitment to seeing the process through to completion. The APC delegation included the party’s Deputy Leader, Ambassador Yansaneh; Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya Esq.; and Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr.

Koroma’s departure from Sierra Leone earlier this year was shrouded in controversy, as it coincided with ongoing legal proceedings tied to his alleged involvement in a failed coup attempt against President Julius Maada Bio’s government in 2023. The former president has consistently denied the allegations, maintaining his focus on health and fitness during his time abroad.

Resolution 4, a key component of the Agreement for National Unity, aims to address political tensions and promote reconciliation by resolving cases of individuals in custody or on trial. The APC’s appeal to expedite its implementation underscores the party’s determination to secure the release of its members and ensure Koroma’s safe return.
