The All People’s Congress (APC) has expressed its commitment to fully participate in the 2025 national census, scheduled to take place from December 2 to 15, 2025.

This announcement comes following President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s recent proclamation of the upcoming census, which, according to the APC, aligns with Sierra Leone’s constitution.

Sidi Yayah Tunis, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, emphasized the significance of the census during an interview with AYV. He highlighted that the necessary legal frameworks, such as the statutory instrument being laid before Parliament, have been followed. Tunis praised the timing of the announcement and acknowledged the census’s critical role in shaping the country’s resource distribution and development agendas, based on population data.

“Census is important for determining how resources are distributed and guiding our development plans. As an opposition party, we recognize its importance and will fully participate,” Tunis stated.

However, Tunis also raised concerns about the country’s preparedness for the census. He questioned whether Sierra Leone has the financial resources, expertise, and time to conduct a census that meets international standards, citing estimates that it could cost the nation up to $30 million.

He further underscored the need for involvement from development partners, particularly the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), to support the process. Tunis stressed the importance of inclusivity, calling attention to the provisions in the Census Act for committees such as the statutory and technical committees, which should involve all stakeholders, including political parties.

As the 2025 census approaches, the APC remains cautious about the challenges ahead, urging the government to ensure adequate preparations and stakeholder engagement to guarantee a credible and comprehensive count.
