The All Peoples Congress National Women’s Wing has commented on the spate of attack by the Government on the Mayor of the Freetown City Council, Her Worship Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr.
The All Peoples Congress National Women’s Wing condemns the act of the Parliament and the Anti-Corruption Commission which was a total embarrassment and stated that the pattern of intimidations and violence against women in general in and around the country poses a significant threat to women’s participation in the social, political and economic developments of Sierra Leone.
The Women’s Wing reminds all parties involved in the seemingly unending spate of harassments and intimidations on the Mayor, that their actions neither resemble nor represent Sierra Leone’s morals, values, ethics and customs that respects the dignity and sanctity of women not only in their homes but also in their work places.
The National Women’s Congress announced their solidarity with Mayor Aki-Sawyerr as well as other women who have endured embarrassment under the government and affirmed that such embarrassments and intimidations done by this government must stop.
The Women’s Wing ended with the calling of all State Actors, Civil Society Groups and international partners to join them admonish the government to cease all unwarranted smear campaigns against the Mayor, which is believed that, they are attempts to tarnish her hard earned reputation and urges the government to focus on the important issues that are threatening the very survival of the state.
