The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) proudly joins the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day under the theme “Invest in women: Accelerate progress.” Aligned with its mission to promote good governance and inclusive development in Africa, the APRM emphasizes collective action and shared responsibility to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment.
In honoring this significant day, the APRM pays tribute to the remarkable women of Sierra Leone who have played pivotal roles in the nation’s development. The legacy of Madam Ella Koblo-Gulama, the first female Paramount Chief and Parliament member, is celebrated for her trailblazing contributions. Her Excellency Mrs. Fatima Maada Bio, the First Lady of Sierra Leone, earns praise for her leadership and vision, particularly in championing initiatives like the “Hands Off Our Girls” campaign, which aims to protect and empower women and girls. Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden, a former minister, journalist, and human rights defender, is acknowledged for her courage and activism in advocating for democracy, justice, and accountability in Sierra Leone.
The APRM also extends recognition to countless women in Sierra Leone and globally, acknowledging their substantial impact on peace, security, justice, and humanity. The women on the frontlines, whether as health workers, caregivers, innovators, or decision-makers, are commended for their dedication. Furthermore, women breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes in fields such as education, science, technology, arts, sports, and business are applauded. The APRM expresses support for women raising their voices, demanding their rights, dignity, and inclusion in society.
On this International Women’s Day, the APRM reaffirms its commitment to investing in women and accelerating progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment. A call is made to all stakeholders to join this endeavor by creating an enabling environment for women to thrive and reach their full potential. The APRM firmly believes that investing in women equates to investing in the future of the nation and the world.
Together, let us forge women’s equality and inspire inclusion. Happy International Women’s Day
