In a recent Twitter post, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, Sierra Leone’s former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has raised alarm over the current state of democracy in the world, with a particular focus on Sierra Leone and Cambodia.

Kamara expressed deep dissatisfaction with the state of democratic processes in various countries, labeling elections as “shambolic events” plagued by fraud.

He cited the June 24th multi-tier elections conducted by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) as a troubling experience in his own country, contributing to his reservations.

Drawing parallels with Cambodia, Kamara highlighted the latest episode of electoral issues, further fueling his concerns about the global state of democracy.

He called on the international community, particularly the free world, to take decisive action to address the threats facing democratic principles.

The seasoned statesman argued that democracy is no longer as secure and fashionable as it once was, posing a serious threat to those who deeply believe in its ideals. He stressed the urgent need for a thorough recalibration of politics to ensure the sustainability and preservation of democracy.

What is the free world doing? Democracy is under threat, no longer fashionable, nor safe for those of us who believe in its ideals. Our politics need recalibration,” he stressed.
