Bahrain, an island country in West Asiai, is seeking to learn from Sierra Leone’s successful experience in obtaining a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

His Excellency Ambassador Ahmed Alturaifi, Chief of Arab and African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed this interest during a meeting with Her Excellency Haja Ishata Thomas, Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Bahrain.

Sierra Leone, currently one of the non-permanent members of the UNSC, was elected to the position in June 2023 under the leadership of President Dr. Julius Maada Bio, which marks the country’s second representation in the UNSC in 52 years, spotlighting its growing international influence.

Ambassador Alturaifi praised Sierra Leone’s reputation for promoting peace and stability on the global stage. He emphasized Bahrain’s desire to learn from Sierra Leone’s experience and collaborate on garnering support within Africa for its own UNSC bid. To facilitate the exchange of knowledge, he proposed the establishment of a joint commission between the two nations.

In her response, Ambassador Thomas acknowledged Sierra Leone’s advancements in international diplomacy, noting its role as the Coordinator of the African Union Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government. The committee is tasked with advocating for Africa’s unified stance on UNSC reform.

“Our position in the non-permanent category allows for further collaborative efforts with friendly partners to foster international peace and stability, especially in the Middle East. We will convey your message for reciprocal support,” she stated.

Ambassador Thomas further engaged with a group of Sierra Leoneans residing in Bahrain, discussing various issues they face. She expressed her appreciation for their positive representation of Sierra Leone and encouraged them to continue adhering to Bahrain’s laws and regulations.

The relationship between Sierra Leone and Bahrain dates back to 1971 when Sierra Leone held the presidency of the UNSC and supported Bahrain’s admission to the United Nations General Assembly. The partnership was further strengthened in June 2022 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to establish diplomatic relations.
