Popular Politician and Philanthropist Beresford Victor Williams have promised to give Le200 Million ($20,000) to each player of the Sierra Leone national team if they win the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mr Victor Williams disclosed this unprecedented prize on Wednesday in an exclusive interview with Sierraloaded, stating “we want our boys to bring the trophy home. We have some of the finest players on the continent. It’s about time that we outperform other nations. The government has provided logistical support to facilitate their participation. We as a nation should now show our appreciation of support to our beloved team.”, he said.
The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone is returning to Africa’s flagship competition for the first time since their second participation in South Africa in 1996.
The Leone Stars are zoned in Group E with reigning African champions Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea. They will begin their campaign on January 11 against the Desert Foxes at the Japoma Stadium in Douala.
While throwing his support behind the Leone stars to win the coveted African trophy Mr Williams underscored that the rationale behind his promise is to encourage the team to bring the trophy home emphasizing; this is the best opportunity they have to make us proud as a nation, in the world of football.
He added that his donation is not a political score points but to proclaim the love of sports.
“Football is a beautiful loving sport and we all love football, in respect of country, continent, religion, colour, background. Football brings us all together. What has politics got to do with you supporting your team to perform well? People that make such comments are the one’s destroying our beloved team. Most of us are supporting foreign teams. I think that is controversial because you don’t support your home team, this is patriotism.
“We wish the team all the best and we all want them to bring the trophy to our beloved country Sierra Leone.”, He said.
