The Communications Director at Sierra Leone’s State House, Myk Berewa, has expressed both pride and disappointment following the loss of his mother in the recent paramount chieftaincy election in Kailahun Penguia Chiefdom.

The election, which took place in the eastern region of Sierra Leone, saw Myk’s mother, a notable female candidate, run against eight male contenders, notably making history as the only woman to contest for the position in the chiefdom.

In a heartfelt statement shared publicly, Myk Berewa acknowledged his mother’s tireless efforts throughout the campaign and emphasized the significance of her candidacy in challenging deep-rooted gender stereotypes.

“As the only woman among eight men in Kailahun Penguia Chiefdom, where people say a woman can’t become chief, you took a stand and shattered those stereotypes,” Myk said. His message reflected both the personal pride he felt and the broader implications of his mother’s campaign for gender equality.

Despite the loss, Myk praised his mother’s campaign, which he described as “amazing,” particularly for her focus on issues that directly impacted the community. “You ran an amazing campaign, met so many people… especially women, youth, and various stakeholders – and pushed for really important issues,” he said in his tribute.

Myk also acknowledged the emotional toll of the election process, especially following his mother’s recent medical evaluation. “It’s totally understandable to feel let down after investing so much time and passion,” he noted. However, he reassured his mother that her efforts and commitment had made a lasting impact, especially for women and children in the region. “This disappointment doesn’t take away from the progress you’ve made in Penguia and the advocacy for women and children,” Myk emphasized.

In his statement, Myk highlighted that his mother’s campaign had made an indelible mark on the community, particularly inspiring women and young people who now saw her as a role model. “You’ve shown such determination and clarity, and so many women and young people look up to you as a source of hope,” he added. Myk believes that these qualities will bring positive change in the future, despite the election results.

The heartfelt message concluded with a note of gratitude to all who supported his mother during the campaign. “A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported my Mum. Your guidance and encouragement mean the world to us, and we truly value your support,” Myk said.
