Former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma celebrated his birthday on October 2nd in Lagos, Nigeria, at a lavish event hosted by Nigerian billionaire Dr. Stanley Uzochukwu.

Known for his philanthropy and business ventures, Uzochukwu, the founder and chairman of Stanel Group, flew Koroma to the exclusive Delborough Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, marking a significant change from the usual celebrations held in Koroma’s hometown of Makeni.

Though many Sierra Leoneans traditionally travel to Makeni for Koroma’s birthday celebrations, this year’s change in venue did not diminish the spirit of the occasion

Koroma, who led Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018, remains an esteemed figure in his country. His birthdays have long been celebrated as occasions of national importance, drawing crowds of supporters and well-wishers from across Sierra Leone. This year, however, due to political circumstances that have extended Koroma’s stay in Nigeria, the festivities took on a new form.

Dr. Uzochukwu personally ensured that Koroma’s birthday was a memorable one, flying the former president in his private jet to The Delborough Lagos, where the celebrations commenced with an exclusive breakfast and a distinguished lunch. A star-studded evening surprise birthday party followed, attended by prominent Nigerian politicians, military generals, and dignitaries.

Some of the top dignitaries at the party included Clement Oluwatumininu Okeowo, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, Senator Daisy Danjuma, Lawyer Catherine Uju Ifejika, and billionaire Dr. Stanley Uzochukwu

The evening was further enlivened with performances by top musicians, contributing to the festive atmosphere and making Koroma feel at home despite being away from Sierra Leone.

Speaking during the celebrations, former President Koroma expressed his gratitude and called the event “one of the best birthday parties” he had ever experienced.

The warmth and hospitality extended by the Nigerian hosts underscored the close ties between the two West African nations, and Nigerians took the opportunity to celebrate Koroma as if he were one of their own.

Dr. Stanley Uzochukwu, a rising figure in Nigerian politics and business, played a key role in ensuring that the former president felt welcomed and appreciated during his stay. Uzochukwu has a reputation for hosting high-profile events at his luxurious Delborough Hotel, which recently also hosted Prince Harry during his visit to Lagos earlier this year.

Despite the change in location, the spirit of the occasion was not diminished, with the celebrations in Lagos demonstrating the respect and admiration that Koroma commands across the region.

The event has further cemented the bond between Nigeria and Sierra Leone, as both nations continue to celebrate the achievements and leadership of former President Koroma.
