Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio received the eagerly awaited 2024 Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Scorecard from the United States Ambassador today.

The MCC Scorecard is a critical assessment of a country’s performance in areas such as governance, economic freedom, and investments in its people

Ambassador Hunt said he was pleased to let the President know that in the 2023 MCC scorecard, Sierra Leone did very well in the control of corruption and democratic rights, which was good news for the government, adding that Sierra Leone passed 10 out of the 20 indicators.

This is an excellent method for evaluating the government’s progress. Our administration has consistently strived to enhance its performance across various metrics in the MCC Scorecard,” he conveyed to President Bio, while also mentioning that in December of this year, the MCC Board would convene to decide on Sierra Leone’s potential reselection for the MCC Compact.

In response, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio expressed his gratitude to the Ambassador for delivering this positive update. He emphasized that his government had consistently undertaken commendable initiatives, leading to impressive scores in MCC assessments.

Through the MCC scorecard, I’ve observed that my administration has made consistent advancements in areas such as gender, corruption control, regulatory policies, health expenditure, and employment opportunities, among others. Besides the eventual MCC Compact benefits, it’s essential for us to monitor and acknowledge the progress we’re achieving,” he affirmed.

The MCC Scorecard plays a vital role in determining a country’s eligibility for MCC funding and assistance programs. A deteriorating score could have far-reaching implications for Sierra Leone, potentially affecting its access to vital resources and support from the United States government.

As the nation awaits the official release of the 2024 MCC Scorecard, there is growing anticipation and anxiety about the potential impact of these findings on Sierra Leone’s development and international relations.
