President Julius Maada Bio is set to commission the new Freetown International Airport on the 3rd March 2023.
This announcement was made by the Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation, Rex Bonapha in a tour with the press at the new airport.
The deputy minister said the new airport will replace the old Lungi airport that was built in 1945 by colonial masters, Britain. He added that the new airport will host large carriers that have been able to land at the old airport.
Bonapha continued that the new airport will also help in boosting the nation’s tourism sector.
The minister also suggested that government could likely use the old airport as an air military base for the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF).
The new Freetown International Airport is at almost completion by Turkish company, Summa Group.
The company will run the airport for more than two decades.
