Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio led a high-level ECOWAS Mission to Guinea-Bissau, in line with the communiqué of the 68th ECOWAS Summit, to engage the country’s military leadership on the ongoing political transition.

According to a statement issued by Bio after the official engagement, the delegation held discussions with the High Military Command of Guinea-Bissau, led by Major-General Horta Inta-a. President Bio said the engagement was part of ECOWAS’ continued efforts to support peace, stability, and constitutional order in the country.

Our discussions were constructive,” President Bio stated, noting that the mission focused on reinforcing the position of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government on the transition process in Guinea-Bissau.

The ECOWAS Chairman said he reiterated the Authority’s call for a short transition period, led by an inclusive government that reflects Guinea-Bissau’s full political spectrum and wider society. He emphasized that inclusivity remains central to ECOWAS’ approach to restoring constitutional governance and long-term stability in the country.

The Sierra Leonean leader was accompanied on the mission by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray. Bio noted that the presence of regional leaders underscored ECOWAS’ collective commitment to dialogue and cooperation with Guinea-Bissau’s authorities.

The statement from President Bio stressed that the mission aligns with decisions taken at the 68th ECOWAS Summit, as the regional bloc continues to engage key stakeholders in Guinea-Bissau to ensure a peaceful and credible transition process.

President Bio’s comments were contained in his official statement following the engagement, which serves as the primary source for the mission’s objectives and outcomes.
