President Julius Maada Bio and First Lady Fatima Bio have returned to Sierra Leone following their participation in the 38th African Union (AU) Summit and the 29th General Assembly of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

During a high-level event at the 38th African Union Summit, President Bio called for a united effort among African leaders to achieve universal immunisation across the continent, emphasizing its critical importance for public health and national security.

Bio’s proposal advocating for reform of the United Nations Security Council also received strong support and was adopted by the Assembly on Sunday, February 16, 2025.

The First Lady, Fatima Bio, who was elected as the new President of OAFLAD during the assembly, expressed her gratitude and excitement upon her return. She was greeted by a massive crowd of Sierra Leoneans from all walks of life, who gathered to celebrate her historic achievement and welcome the couple back home.

In a heartfelt statement, Fatima Bio described the atmosphere as electric, filled with excitement and pride. “The unity displayed by the citizens during my welcome serves as a powerful reminder of our collective strength and determination to support initiatives that foster growth and development in the country and the continent,” she wrote.

She expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming support shown by Sierra Leoneans, stating, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude and deep appreciation for the love, trust, and unwavering support you continue to show me. Seeing thousands of you come out to celebrate our return is a moment I will cherish forever.”

Reflecting on her new role as OAFLAD President, Fatima Bio emphasized that the victory was not hers alone but a shared achievement for all Sierra Leoneans. “This victory is not mine alone—it belongs to all of us who believe in the power of transformation and the limitless potential of Sierra Leone,” she said.

The First Lady also acknowledged the unwavering support of her husband, President Julius Maada Bio, describing him as her pillar of strength. “Your steadfast support, guidance, and unwavering belief in me have been my pillar of strength. You are not just my partner in life but also my greatest source of encouragement in this journey of service,” she added.

Fatima Bio pledged to continue championing causes that uplift the people of Sierra Leone, empower women, and secure a brighter future for the next generation. She concluded her statement by thanking Sierra Leoneans for their belief in her and for standing with her on this journey of hope, progress, and unity.
