Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Bio has applauded the women of Sierra Leone who took to the street of Freetown on Tuesday March 14 2023 to appreciate her husband’s move to enact the Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (GEWE) Bill 20222.
The GEWE Bill ensures that there will be the inclusion of women in every aspect of decision making in the country.
‘’It was only meant to deliver a THANK you message to president bio for the enactment of our gender act and this happens. Thank you Freetown we are grateful,’’ the First Lady stated.
The First Lady believed the gesture was a great move by the women and assured them that, women and girls of this country are in safe hands as the President is everyday working to protect them.
Addressing the over 200,000 women and girls from various walks of life at State House, President Bio told them that the future of Sierra Leone belongs to women.
“Today, I would like to reaffirm that the future of Sierra Leone is female,” the President said.
President Bio assured that he will continue to invest in women and education as a strategy to build a resilient and prosperous Sierra Leone.
“With these deliberate actions of my government towards women’s empowerment, let me assure you today that one day soon a woman would be elected as President of Sierra Leone,” the President affirmed.
According to Bio, he is preparing a generation or strong and educated women for a prosperous Nation.
He used the forum as an opportunity to highlight various strategic reforms of his government towards women’s empowerment including the free quality education, review of sexual offenses law, establishment of a special model court to prosecute rape cases, enactment of the gender and women’s empowerment law, all under a period of five years.
