The ECOWAS-AU-UNOWAS Mission on National Unity Agreement has paid a courtesy visit to the President of Sierra Leone, H.E. Maada Bio.

The visit demonstrates the commitment of the international community to support Sierra Leone in its journey towards sustained peace and unity.

As moral guarantors of the Agreement, ECOWAS, AU, and UNOWAS have jointly urged all political actors and citizens to prioritize the peace, unity, and stability of the nation above partisan interests. Their unified stance highlights the critical importance of this Agreement in ensuring a harmonious political climate in Sierra Leone.

President Bio states “Today, I received a joint @ecowas_cedeao, @_AfricanUnion @UN_UNOWAS Assessment Mission as a follow up to the Agreement for National Unity signed between the Government of Sierra Leone and the All People’s Congress.
I reaffirmed my Government’s commitment to the Agreement and underscored the importance of dialogue as a critical component of governance and peace consolidation.
I expressed my sincere appreciation to the Mission’s Co-leads – H.E Leonardo Santos Simão and H.E Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang – and thanked them for their role as Moral Guarantors to the Agreement.

The Agreement for National Unity, a pivotal accord signed in late 2023, aims to bridge political divides and foster a cooperative spirit among Sierra Leone’s political entities. This agreement is seen as a cornerstone for achieving long-term stability and development in the country.

The deployment of the Joint Assessment Mission reflects the continuous commitment of ECOWAS, AU, and UNOWAS to support Sierra Leone’s efforts in maintaining national cohesion and political stability. The international community will be closely monitoring the outcomes of this mission, hoping it will pave the way for a more united and peaceful Sierra Leone.
