President Julius Maada Bio has pledged to implement a permanent fix for the country’s energy crisis.
This was disclosed by Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security, and head of the Energy Governance Coordination Group (EGCG), during a recent Energy Sector Steering Committee meeting.
Speaking to stakeholders, Dr. Yumkella emphasized President Bio’s dedication to addressing the structural issues that have plagued the nation’s energy sector for years. According to Dr. Yumkella, governance and coordination challenges within the sector have significantly contributed to the energy crisis.
The President recognizes the need for strong leadership across agencies, and the formation of the EGCG is a direct response to these concerns,” he said. As Chairman of the EGCG, Dr. Yumkella affirmed his commitment to working closely with the President to ensure the successful implementation of reforms.
During the meeting, Deputy Minister of Energy I, Dr. Eldred Taylor, provided an overview of ongoing activities in the Ministry, including mini-grid projects, donor coordination, and private sector involvement. He also outlined efforts to enhance Sierra Leone’s energy generation and transmission infrastructure.
Deputy Minister of Energy II, Ing. Edmond Nonie, stressed the importance of ensuring both the technical and financial viability of the sector. He also discussed plans for the upcoming dry season and the rehabilitation of key facilities managed by the Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC).
Ndeye Koroma, National Coordinator of the Sierra Leone Compact Development Unit, praised the formation of the EGCG, highlighting its role in fostering collaboration between development partners and the Ministry. She confirmed that the Steering Committee will meet quarterly to oversee progress in the sector.
The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) also played a key role in the discussions. Board Chairman Ing. Andrew Kailie, along with Director-General Dr. Joe Lahai, outlined EDSA’s commitment to expanding access to affordable and reliable electricity across Sierra Leone.
